Malice of Nature By Geoffrey C. Porter I lay breathing on the cool desert floor while the hot sun beat down on my scales. The hunger gnawed on my insides. I had to wait to hunt, for the sun scorched everything with a blazing heat in which my prey could hide. I heard a buzzard high above and pondered if I should make tracks. I did not fear a lone buzzard, for I knew the strength of my toxins. While the hunger ate away at me, I heard the buzzard a second time from far away. I tasted the air with my tongue hoping for a trail. I sensed nothing. I could tell from the slight change in the heat coming off the rocks and sand that the sun neared the end of its day: time to hunt. I slithered forward on my belly and touched the air with my tongue every few moments. I ate no less than weeks ago, and I never felt such hunger as now. I started making good time side-winding through the desert around cacti and rocks. Ahhh, a cool, dark spot glowed bluish in a dune. I poked my head in the hole and sniffed with my tongue. I smelled fur and smiled my wicked serpent's smile. Everything got cool and dark as I inched my way into the tunnel. I found a hollowed out chamber, and three hot bodies scurried about. I pulled back and struck with my venom fangs at the creature. As I pulled back, my target lay twitching, and I waited. I felt no malice, but I was quite pleased to be eating. Soon, the body started to cool. I inched forward and nudged it with my nose. I opened my mouth wide letting loose my jaw. I swallowed the small, furry creature and felt full in my belly. This is an example of short-short fiction that I wrote for Tim Waggoner's Advanced Fiction course in the winter of 2008. |
